The overwhelming data grid

I felt the exact same way! Looks like you need form not table. I haven't gotten into forms much, but you can pretty much do just about anything. It may help to think of a datagrid as a premade framework in it's own right. Everything already works out of the box, but you can go into the innards if you will, and make it work the way you like, if you know how. You can also break it, so backups, good! Time Machine has saved my bacon more than once.
