Could you create an interface that user could customize
at will? That is, user could change backgroud colors
or patterns, change font name, size and color, change
button icons,etc... or maybe this is too much???

David, start experimenting with striped backgrounds like Apple's,
graphic effects like shadows and glow to add a simple 3d look,
You could use a monochrome palette (a single color with lighter
and darker shades) and minimalist icon designs that shows
only the silhouette.
