you might want to have a look at
http://revonline2.runrev.com/stack/428/OldTableFieldDragDividers
in the script of the field is a handler:
adjustToWidthOfContent
that does what you want. 
Additionally you can adjust the width of the columns by manually dragging
the divider lines.
