The main arguments against animated gifs would be the lack of color 
range, and the file size. If there are 17000 files of 1-4 seconds 
each, so let's say 36000 seconds worth altogether, that's the same 
amount of time as five full length Hollywood movies, and with double 
layer discs being enough of a hassle to think this would want to fit 
onto one side of a DVD, it would be challenging if the animations 
were only GIF compressed.

How big an image will it be? How many frames per second? Fitting ten 
hours of full size full frame rate video onto a DVD is going to be 
tough.
