Non-Motif Linux Interface?

Odd, all of my .so files in /usr/lib have text after the ".so", as in:

  /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
  /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0
  /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.3

etc.

Any ideas why this might be?
