System global gets lost

This just happened to me and I wonder if anyone knows why.

I have a script that acceses the $USER global. It has been working fine 
for almost a year, in several IDEs and through several Rev versions. 
Suddenly today, it disappeared from the variable watcher and asking for 
the value in the message box returned empty. I restarted Rev and it was 
back again.

What would make it go away? The other globals appeared to be there still.
