Sounds like it is just hiding the controller. Try this in the message 
box:

start player "myplayer"

And see if the MP3 plays. If so, you'll just need to reset the 
showController property, I believe? Others might be able to chime in on 
that- but I'm guessing the file will play with the above. Note that 
many people intentionally hide players which are audio only for 
scripted playback.
