Actually, Greg, you don't. Simply import the JPEG, set the resulting image
to an ID that won't conflict (I use 59999) and do:

  set the backgroundPattern of this stack to <idOfImportedJPEG>

Once you do that, all cards and substacks of the stack will have that
background pattern (unless you specifically override it on a card-by-card
basis).
