activating a menu via script

drag from (the loc of  button "thepulldown") to  (the loc of  button 
"thepulldown")

Is able to popup a menu button. However then, every script comes to a 
screeching halt.

you could "fake" the menu with a stack, but that's really too much 
trouble for such a simple task...
