htmlText - hard to pin down cause of crash

I've had intermittet problems in all builds of Rev going back to v2.0, 
in which swapping out htmlText in fields sometimes causes a hard crash.

I've had a tough time pinning down the exact cause of the crash and 
can't find a related bug in Bugzilla, so if you've experienced something 
similar please contact me offlist with details and we can brainstorm a 
recipe and submit it.
