Some time ago I evaluated VMWare and VPC on W2K (or maybe an early XP).
Though VMWare described some better features, they did not work well.
VMWare attempts to use the host OS networking to simulate networks and
did a poor job of it. It essentially broke SMB.

I need net simulation and serial simulation and VMWare (at that time)
made lots of promises but fell short.

I have some customer simulations I keep around so I keep VPC. But,
I'll consider it again.

One of the problems with software targeted for linux is that it is
sloppy and ports to Windows are made with little regard to quality.

If it was, I'd evaluate it again.

On the other hand, the drive files are not compatible between OS X VPC
and Windows VPC.
