Conversion of hex pairs to chars...best way?

I use the binaryEncode functions extensively in MIDI Builder (incl. 
with Rev 2.0), and once I understood what I was trying to do  :-)   
things went very smoothly.  As an aside, I do not believe that any 
other xTalk tool has binary encoding/decoding capabilities; perhaps not 
RealBasic, either?
