Thanks for the hint Sarah.  I just checked this again and the path to 
the database is correct so I don't think that is the problem.

Oddly enough after altering my code only enough to try and clarify and 
pinpoint where the error messages were coming from I stopped receiving 
error messages and the database stuff started working.
