the easiest fix for this is to set something up and never think of it, ever
again.
that thing is caddy. it's stupid-simple to set up, and it can act as a
reverse proxy, so your web server can just communicate with http, to caddy,
and caddy will take care of everything related to https, including all of
the cert silliness. it's so forgettable, after setting it up, that i had to
go look it up, for this post. it's been...three years? four years? of not
touching it.

On the first day, God created the heavens and the Earth
On the second day, God created the oceans.
On the third day, God put the animals on hold for a few hours,
   and did a little diving.
And God said, "This is good."
