I must admit I am not entirely sure what you want  but perhaps..

Instead of a direct call to the handler, can you use

Dispatch [function] <handlername> to <toolstack> [with parameters]

The It variable (or is it the result?, I can never remember) will contain “not handled” if the handler does not exist
