Bug 20117: new rc2 sets a backdrop, and preferences for same

Just started 8.1.6 rc 2 *AGAIN*, both on my Mac (10.7.5) and my Linux 
(Xubuntu 16.04) and
in both cases got a WHITE backdrop even though I had set the Preferences 
to NO backdrop.
