Unfortunately not. Like most optimization, it tends to be bespoke to the situation.
Also the slowdown is actually proportional to nlog n for sort - so slightly more than a constant multiplier. Seeing one run in isolation won't show that though.
I'm slightly surprised lineOffset would generally be 10 times slower though - do you have code that demonstrates that?
