menuitems accumulating extra ( in them?

I am seeing one menuItem  in particular (hmm, the only one I disable) pick
up multiple ( in front of it.

Is the correct behavior of "disable menuItem foo" to simply stick a (
before its line of the text of the button in question?

Should I be checking for whether or not it's already disabled (seems that
this would be far, far faster to do in the engine than user code)
