Visual effects on iOS?

I'm using 6.7.3 on the most recent version of Mac/iOS. This code:

   lock screen
   hide image currentImage of me
   show image nextImage of me
   unlock screen with visual effect scroll left

Just swaps the images with no visual effect at all. I've tried in LC and in
the simulator. I've tried other effects. No luck. Any ideas?
