iOS iPAd development question

Hello,

Never having built an iPad app I was wondering the following...

If I create an app that I want to run on my iPad but not sell it (only use it for myself) then do I still need to submit it to the App store?

Or is there a way a developer can actually build, test / run their app on an actual iPad and not just a simulator?

I am not looking to have to jailbreak my iPad so I want to know if this is possible.
