My wife had her passport stolen by a pickpocket on the Rome metro earlier
this year. Fortunately, we were on our way to Naples and there is a
consulate there. We had no idea what would be involved in getting a new
passport but it turned out to be an easy process and she got a temporary
passport within a couple of hours.

We are always very careful about keeping our valuables safe but the
pickpockets over there are very adept!
