Livecode 7 - Unicode - items not the same as pre-7?

To quote Gilda Radner’s Saturday Night Live character “Oh, nevermind.”
In my code I’m using the XML Xpath function to grab data out of a bunch of XML and insert it into items on a line. Problem is that the Xpath function either adds stuff to the end of the data it returns or that stuff is invisible when viewed in a browser. Either way, once I cleaned off characters from the Xpath function results, it did the right thing.

The left arrow ceases to move the insertion point.
