This is due to the different screen gamma settings on Mac.  It affects the appearance but doesn't change the actual bitmap data.  The screen gamma can be set by the. user, and the default setting on Mac is different from the default on Windows.

I had thought it was the gamma setting that was causing the problem but now I think Bernd is right and byteToChar is the answer.
