I know this, Neil, but that is not the point!

It just does not work on the desktop (with or without QuickTIme) this way!

MP4 is NOT supported with "PLAY VC xy" at least not on WIndows and it does not works
as exspected on a Mac, too! 

Please try it by yourself! Do it, please!
