Is backdrop better these days?

Hi all.

I'm working to add backdrop or an alternative method to an app used for
presentations to hide the desktop. I see posts from 05 and 09 say backdrop
is more trouble than it's worth... is that still so or has it been
improved/fixed?

I did roll my own "curtain" substack as an experiment, but the bit I'm
missing is how to layer the curtain substack so stays behind the main stack.
Suggestions?
