It's 6.0 and 6.1 that I don't understand existing . . .

On a sane release pattern, you still issue the bug fixes, security patches,
and hardware updates for the prior version--so there should still be one or
two 5.5.x releases coming.

Once 6.1 is finally stable, only security patches would go to 5.5.

For many things, when the cutting edge doesn't matter, staying a version
behind makes a lot of sense, especially if you don't need something from
the new one.
