error in test contion

Yes, as close as I can--this code never fails when I single-step through
it; only when running on it's own, and only when t1 (or the underlying test
when I try directly) is true.

I also have a check-log, and when I have it write to this just before the
test, t1 is indeed true.

How can I possibly have a "tainted" logical value?
