From your description I'm not sure how you are using setting the filename of an image to empty clearing it as a feature. Note that if you have an imported image then setting its text should clear it. If you have a referenced image then setting its filename should clear it. The quirk is that if you have a referenced image and set the filename to empty then it currently clears it.
