dealing with these *huge* pdf files generated

that's really odd, as I thought Postscript was designed to be frugal - the
beginnings of desktop publishing used machines with 128k of RAM!

 (  in the case if there is a bitmap present, all bets are off, because the
size will explode trying to describe an image.)
