"launch document" synchronous on Linux only?

Yes, apparently only on Ubuntu - or maybe even just my Ubuntu.  I 
haven't heard back from other Ubuntu users, but Warren was kind enough 
to test on openSUSE and Mint and he sees the asynch behavior we see on 
OS X, which is what I've come to expect from "launch document".
