Backgroundcolor of a line in a scrolling list

I have a need to set the background color of specific lines in a scrolling
list field.  All works quite nicely  except that color does not quite
extend to the edges of the scrolling list.  I suspect that it stays within
the margin settings of the field.

It would be nice to have the color extend the full width of the field, like
the color for hilited lines does.  Any ideas?
