the strict compile shadowing bug

I think I just narrowed this a bit.

I believe that the "name shadows another name" bug *only* bites if
there has already been a strict compilation error.  Today it happened
after I changed the name of a variable from a misspelling.  It then
immediate hit shadowing itself.

Thinking back, I believe that the "caught" variable problem always
precedes this bug.
