Preferences menu behaviour on Mac changed in LC 5.5?

I figured out the problem.

In the text of the "Edit" button of the menu bar group there were 5
invisible characters at the beginning of the line with the "Preferences"
menu item.  I only discovered them when I was using the arrow keys to move
through the text of the button.   When I copied the text from the property
inspector into Text Wrangler and showed invisibles the invisible characters
appeared as red ¿   I checked the ascii value of the characters and it was
0.  
When I removed the invisible characters the preferences menu was back to
normal.

I am not sure how the invisible characters are being added to the beginning
of the preferences menu.
