I was just reading about that. The loss of disk space happens only on
laptop Macs, not on desktop, and is due to "local snapshots" taken by
Time Machine when your backup external drive isn't connected.
There's a terminal command to turn it off, and there's some other way to
erase the snapshots but I've lost that link now. But here's how to turn
it off:

If Stephen is on a MacBook maybe low disk space is what's causing the
memory-swap beachball.
I do not like Lion at all, but we're forced into it if we want to
continue as Mac developers.
