Checksum via FTP???

I get it now. I tried FTP file retrieval a while back and had variable 
luck, I think it depends on how your server is set up. The details have 
faded now, but I think I was able to retrieve files by FTP as long as 
they weren't in the web directory. If you can put your file outside of 
public_html on the server it might work.
