Sorry I can't help with the MySQL problem (another large area of virgin territory in my knowledge landscape) but FYI, on the tools side of things, MacUpdate Promo are doing a special on Navicat today http://www.mupromo.com/ - and there might be some getting started help lurking amongst their video(?)
