State of an application status

Using the on suspend and on resume handlers I can tell when a program becomes a background application for foreground application.

There are times in my program that I want it to behave differently depending if it is foreground or not.

How can I query the current state of the application?

I suppose I could continually update some flag with the on suspend and on resume handlers but that seems pretty inelegant.
