Mac OS X Lion

I was just told the following about Lion:

1) It will only install correctly if you are on the very latest version of
Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
2) Apple have discontinued Snow Leopard

If that is true and you don't already have Snow Leopard installed, seems
like you're screwed.

Can anyone confirm this?
