Are iOS push notifications needed for this use case?

...thanks for the link, Tom. Interesting concept but I'm not sure if a per-user, service-based model could work for the app I have in mind (it introduces pricing issues for me and security concerns for my target market).

Native support for push notifications would be so much easier! :-(
