But manipulating the contents of an item does (can) change the number of 
items.
    put "a,b,c" into temp
    put temp && the number of items in temp
     ===>  a,b,c 3
    put empty into the last item of temp
    put temp && the number of items in temp
     ===>  a,b, 2
