Zipping an application package by script

The problem is that it, being Linux doesn't seem to like mac .app 
packages. That's the rub.

tar: /Users/...app/: Cannot open: Is a directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

could someone try this with a standalone.app being tarred?
