internet problems with intel-only build?

i had a strange problem, don't know if it is reproducible out there. i  
did a build of a program i've been developing for years, and for the  
first time did an intel-only build for OS X. suddenly it refused to  
load files from the internet. there appeared to be no problem with the  
code, i rebuilt for universal (my usual practice) and the problems  
disappeared.

are the spirits messing with me?
