A Way to Import PNGs with Recognized Layers?

Hi all,

Ive used Fireworks for some time, and it uses PNG (sort of) as its native
file format. It occurs to me that being able to import a PNG and specify
what happens to those layers during import would make for a very nice
workflow situation. Has anyone ever touched this before or something like
it?
