Actually... yes. ;-)

I sometimes have trouble retrieving accented characters from  
preferences files using 'defaults read' shell scripts, so I use plutil  
to convert to XML and read that in instead.

The OS X prefs stack I posted on the list a few months ago includes a  
call to it.
