no mousedown and no selectionChanged with unlocked fields?

Hello,

can someone shed some light for me on this subject?

Why is there no mousedown / mouseup and even no selectionChanged message in
a field, which is NOT locked (text can be entered)? E.g. to check if the
mouse is positioned into a field. I like to have plausible explanations for
what is going on.

What is the straight way to check if the clickloc is within a field? Or am I
missing a field option?
