This seems like yet another enhancement to image referencing :-)

But this wouldn't provide as much freedom as being able to reference custom
property image data because again, you would still need a physical image
object present somewhere in the stack.  The goal of the above feature
request was to eliminate the dependency on a physical object and the
limitations that go along with it.
