Actually when I was trying this stuff out I got an error,

Script compile error:
Error description: Function: missing ')'

when using

put exists (btn "UFOs" in grp "America")

from the message box.

Anyway about the original question -- the exists function works if you take 
out the "group" aspect. So I don't think this is a bug.
