Unidentified Flickering Menu (UFM) Phenomenon

I've never seen it, but I remember Scott Raney saying that menu 
manipulation on the Mac was very expensive in terms of CPU and RAM 
usage. He always recommended using the lock menus command before making 
any menu alterations, then unlock menus at the end of the handler.
