The main reason I use Thunderbird is for the white type on black background
skin... having a white back ground "shining" in your eyes all day is very
tiring. The iris is trying to "close down" to shut out the light at the same
time as you are trying to read... if you are crazy enough to also have a
light
source behind your computer, you probably are a good case for headaches
and eye strain... (everyone is different...)
At any rate, there is a good reason for reversed layouts...
and the "amber terminal" look
