Ubuntu 6.0.6 and AIFF files

I am completely unable to get Ubuntu 6.0.6 to play AIFF files, whether 'by themselves' or via a Runtime Revolution stack.

Now 'downgrading' and upgraded computer as will take less time than converting 260 sound files and editing 200 'play' commands.
